On Daybreak Africa: Uganda’s president on Monday signed into law tough new anti-LGBTQ legislation supported by many in Ugandans but widely condemned by rights activists and others abroad. Just hours later, eleven activists petitioned the constitutional court seeking to block its implementation. Nigeria has a new president. Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos state, and a chieftain of the governing All Progressives Congress, was sworn-in at Eagle Square in the capital, Abuja, on Monday. And, In Sierra Leone, the main opposition All People's Congress (APC) launched its manifesto document Monday, ahead of the coming June 24 general election. Africa News Tonight: UN Special Rapporteur Voices Concerns About Zimbabwe Human Rights Situation Ahead of August Elections & More
A United Nations special rapporteur has voiced concern about the deteriorating political situation in Zimbabwe, where human rights defenders and opposition activists are facing imprisonment. In Senegal, police fired tear gas at a volatile protest near the home of main opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who is currently awaiting the verdict of a rape trial. And, in Malawi, former President Bakili Muluzi has been acquitted by the High Court after being accused of misusing $12 million in public funds while in power from 1994-2004. Africa News Tonight: Cease-Fire Extended for Five Days in Sudan, Nigeria’s Military Rescue Three Abducted Schoolgirls & More
The Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces have agreed to extend their week-old cease-fire for five more days, in a deal brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States. Nigeria’s military in May rescued three school girls captured by Boko Haram more than nine years ago in the north of the country. And, the International Monetary Fund says it must work with Egypt to agree a date for an initial review of the reforms pledged under a $3 billion financial package awarded by the United Nations financial agency in December.
