A Senegalese official has announced that nine people were killed in protests in the capital Dakar, a day after a court convicted opposition leader Ousmane Sonko of "corrupting youth" and sentenced him to two years in prison. Suspected islamist militants attacked a village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday, leaving several people dead. And, residents of Khartoum took shelter today, as fighting has ramped up following the failure of negotiations and the collapse of a U.S.- and Saudi-brokered cease-fire. TB Alliance: Stronger Commitments Needed to End TB
On this special edition of Press Conference USA, VOA’s Kim Lewis discusses where the world stands regarding its goal of ending tuberculosis, and the importance of following through on commitments made to end the disease, with Dr. Mel Spigelman, President and CEO of TB Alliance. TB deaths have been on the rise in the past two years, yet funding for treatment and research continues to be lacking. Turkey Runoff Results
Incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defeated opposition leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, in the May 28 presidential runoff, clinching another five-year term in office. Erdogan’s 52-48 margin of victory illustrates a deeply divided electorate and left hopeful followers of the opposition alliance in a state of despondency.
