On Africa News Tonight: Youth in the Democratic Republic of Congo have expressed divided opinions on President Felix Tshisekedi’s call to have them support the military in the fight against M23 rebels, with some saying they are ready, while others in North Kivu provide say their government abandoned them. Political analysts watching developments as African leaders prepare for the U.S.- Africa Leaders Summit say President Joe Biden’s administration is looking to use the summit to temper with China’s influence on the continent while rejuvenating relations between Africa and Washington.
Sonny Side of Sports: Former Nigerian Footballer Emmanuel Amuneke Evaluates African Teams Performance in World Cup
Scoring a World Cup goal is a wonderful memory for any football player. Former Nigerian player Emmanuel Amuneke has two World Cup goals on his impressive football resume. He found the net against Bulgaria and Italy at the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Also in 1994, Amuneke was named the African Footballer of the Year. Twenty-eight years later, and now a coach, Amuneke has been watching the World Cup action in Qatar. He says the five African teams gave a good account of themselves, with Morocco continuing to wave the African flag high in the quarterfinals. We'll hear his comments on Friday's Sonny Side of Sports, and Sonny will have lots more World Cup news.
Africa News Tonight – U.N. High Commissioner Launches Human Rights Commemoration Campaign; Nigeria Probes Report Focused on Military
On Africa News Tonight: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Tuerk, Friday launched a year-long campaign focused on marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which happened 75 years ago. Nigeria’s human rights commission Friday announced that it will probe a report focused on military authorities who allegedly ran an abortion program that terminated thousands of pregnancies among women and girls who were rescued from Boko Haram militants.

Host Carol Castiel speaks with Kurt Braddock, professor of public communication at American University and author of “Weaponized Words: The Strategic Role of Persuasion in Violent Radicalization and Counter-Radicalization,” about the concept of “stochastic” terrorism, which explains how extremist rhetoric may lead to violent acts, such as the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and measures to combat it.
