Tension in South Sudan after arrest of military, opposition leaders

Tensions are rising in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, following the arrest of senior military and political leaders of the opposition group, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and Army-in-Opposition, SPLM/A-IO. UN: Human rights defenders in DRC risk reprisals, abuses

A United Nations expert warned Wednesday that human rights defenders in conflict-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo face a high risk of reprisals and serious abuses. The French News Agency (AFP) says Mary Lawlor, the UN special rapporteur about human rights defenders, expressed her "extreme concern" over the situation facing activists in eastern DRC. Meanwhile, the United Nations says the conflicts there and in Sudan continue to create humanitarian crises. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, briefed journalists Wednesday in New York.

Gabon’s opposition parties support junta leader’s presidential bid

In Gabon, it appears military leader General Brice Oliqui Nguema’s decision to seek the presidency may have the support of nearly all opposition parties. This, after another leading opposition member, Thérence Gnembou Moutsona of the Citizen Awakening Party, declared his support for General Oliqui. Gabon will hold presidential elections on April 12 to end military rule which began with a coup on April 30, 2023. Alexandra Pangha, spokesperson for Gnembou Moutsona, tells VOA’s James Butty, Moutsona believes General Oliqui will be able to carry out the reforms he promised.

Analyst: South Sudan arrests signal no confidence in peace process

A South Sudan expert says the arrests this week of individuals affiliated with the country’s revitalized peace agreement signifies a lack of confidence in the process. South Sudan troops have arrested the oil minister and deputy head of the armed forces, both allies of Vice-President Riek Machar. The French News Agency (AFP) reports General Gabriel Duop Lam, a close ally of Machar, was arrested on Tuesday after the army accused him of supporting rebels in Upper Nile state in the northeast of the country. Brian Adeba, a senior policy advisor at The Sentry – an organization that seeks to disable multinational predatory networks benefiting from violent conflict, tells VOA’s James Butty, both sides should pursue de-escalation to mitigate the rising tension.

Gabon’s junta leader to run for president

A Gabonese rights and democracy activist says he’s disappointed in the decision by military leader General Brice Oliqui Nguema to seek the presidency. Franck Jocktane says Oliqui did not keep the promise he made to the people when he overthrew Ali Bongo. Gabon will hold presidential elections on April 22 to end military rule which began with the coup on April 30, 2023. Oliqui Nguema announced Monday that he’s running for president because the Gabonese public is urging him to. Jocktane VOA’s James Butty, the way things look now, Oliqui could win because he was able to cleverly sell himself as the savior of the people.

Guinean authorities announced a reduction in the price of rice, the country’s staple food, and other food items ahead of the month of Ramadan. Namibians bid farewell to country’s founding president

Thousands of Namibians gathered on the outskirts of the capital Windhoek on Saturday to bid farewell to the country’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, who died last month in a private hospital at the age of 95. UNICEF: Time running out to save thousands in DRC amid insecurity

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says worsening insecurity in the DRC’s rebel-controlled cities of Goma and Bukavu is making it extremely difficult to feed and care for thousands of children and women. Founder of Kenya’s new PLP party seeks to ‘liberate’ country

The founder of Kenya’s rebranded People’s Liberation Party (PLP) says it aims to “liberate” the country from social, economic and political oppression in the 2027 presidential election. Martha Karua says the PLP, formerly Narc Kenya, says President Ruto should give way. Ruto has accused Karua and the PLP of lacking solutions to Kenya’s problems but only focusing on removing him from power.
