Dozens of troops from Russia’s private military company the Wagner Group arrived this week in the Central African Republic to help in securing a constitutional referendum on July 30. The referendum has the potential to sanction an extended term for incumbent President of the Central African Republic Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who has ruled the country since March 30, 2016. Meanwhile, a lawsuit was filed on Tuesday by the Libyan American Alliance against the Wagner Group due to the unexplained detainment and murder of a local family in 2019 by Wagner fighters stationed in Libya. For more on the lawsuit and the group’s presence in C.A.R., VOA's Esther Githui-Ewart spoke to Mongi Dhaouadi, a North Africa political analyst and executive director of the Libyan American Alliance.
