Truck Drivers Stranded at Nigeria's Closed Border with Niger
Trucks filled with goods either leaving or going into Nigeria are stranded at the Jibia side of the Nigeria-Niger border days after Nigeria closed all land access with the country. Jibia sits along on the Nigerian border with Niger, which truck drivers have to cross to access either of the West African nations. The Economic Community of West African States — which both Nigeria and Niger are members — sanctioned Niger after the toppling of the Mohamed Bazoum-led government by soldiers last month. Relations between Niger and ECOWAS is deteriorating by the day as the deadline for military action against the junta ended Sunday. Niger's military junta Tuesday refused a last-minute diplomatic attempt by ECOWAS and global powers aimed at reinstating Bazoum before an emergency summit Thursday.
