Tanzania President: Opposition Parties Free to Hold Rallies
Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday lifted a ban on opposition rallies imposed in 2016 by her predecessor, John Magufuli, early in his first term. Hassan has been under pressure to break with some of Magufuli's more hardline policies, described by critics as undemocratic. Since taking office, Hassan has sought to make conciliatory moves to the opposition, but has previously been branded a "dictator" by her critics with fears remaining about the state of political and media freedoms.
