Juneteenth holiday honors legacy of formerly enslaved individuals in US
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States two days after the civil war's conclusion. After first receiving their freedom by federal proclamation, many formerly enslaved Africans Americans would go on to create their own communities across the southern United States. VOA’s Philip Alexiou went to one such community, Gum Springs, for a look into how the town is still honoring the formerly enslaved who first created it in 1833.
