An estimated 247 million people were infected with malaria in 2021, and about 619 000 of them lost their lives, according to the World Health Organization. Most victims are children under 5 in Africa, and in 2021, they accounted for nearly 80% of all malaria deaths in the WHO African Region. The RBM Partnership to End Malaria, the global platform for coordinated action against the disease, has welcomed WHO’s recent recommendation of the world’s second malaria vaccine and warns that “it’s not the only solution" to fight the illness. For more insight into the recent announcement, VOA’s Linord Moudou spoke with Dr. Michael Adekunle Charles, CEO of the RBM Partnership.
