Climate Crisis Challenges Nigeria's Wheat Self-Sufficiency
Climate fallout and insecurity in the northern part of Nigeria where grains are largely grown has hindered efforts to make Africa’s largest economy self-reliant in wheat production. This in turn has compounded local food prices, because Nigeria does not produce enough wheat to make up for lost supplies tied to the war in Ukraine. Ukraine announced a plan this year to send more wheat to the West African country at lower prices, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. But Russia withdrew from a United Nations and Turkey-brokered pact this week that allowed Ukraine to export grain from the Black Sea.
