Cyclone Chido batters Mayotte, makes landfall on African continent
Hundreds of people are feared dead in Mayotte after the French Indian Ocean territory was hit by a powerful cyclone. Whole settlements were flattened when Cyclone Chido carried wind speeds of more than 225km/h (140mph.) Rescue workers, including reinforcements from France, are combing through the debris searching for survivors. Some of Mayotte's population of 320,000 have said they are struggling with severe food and water shortages. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci, of Capital Weather Gang, tells VOA’s Carol Van Dam Cyclone Chido also made landfall in Mozambique, where it brought flash flooding and downed power lines.
