Russian influence has been gaining ground across Africa in recent years, placing the continent at the crux of the growing geopolitical contest between the Kremlin and the White House. In South Africa, Moscow’s ties with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) were forged during the Cold War, when the Soviet Union backed the ANC's fight against apartheid.
