Every year, June 20 is dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of refugees throughout the world. World Refugee Day was first celebrated in 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees that defined who a refugee is and set out the rights of individuals who are granted asylum - and the responsibilities of host nations.
