The government said in a statement that the security forces were in control of the situation, but residents told Reuters that gunfire and explosions remained audible.

The country’s President Julius Maada Bio assured his citizen via X that his government is taking all steps to keep the country safe.

“The PEACE of our beloved NATION IS PRICELESS and we shall continue to protect the peace and security of S9erra Leone against the forces that wisht to truncate our much-cherished stability, “ Bio wrote on X

The political situation in the West African nation has remained tense since President Bio’s re-election in a disputed election in June, the result of which was rejected by the main opposition candidate.

Anti-government protests that resulted in the death of six police officers and at least 21 civilians last August were an attempt to overthrow the government, President Maada Bio said at the time.
