The U.S. Supreme Court’s recently issued a landmark decision that presidents have immunity for exercising their core constitutional powers. They are also entitled to a presumption of immunity for official acts. For some African countries, former leaders have invoked immunity as a defense when facing charges ranging from corruption to human rights violations.
