Tensions Flare Between Migrants and Tunisia Citizens
On Monday, the latest unrest between sub-Saharan migrants and Tunisia citizens started after the funeral of a 41-year-old Tunisian man who had been stabbed to death in an altercation between local residents and migrants, leading to the arrest of three suspects from Cameroon. Tunisia has seen a rise in racially motivated attacks following President Kais Saied's comments in February accusing ‘hordes’ of migrants of bringing violence and alleging a ‘criminal plot’ to change the country's demographic makeup. Currently, racial tensions in the Tunisian coastal city of Sfax have flared into violence against migrants, where witnesses say dozens of migrants were forcibly evicted from the city while others fled. For more, VOA’s Esther-Githui Ewart spoke to Mongi Dhaouadi, president of Tunisian United Network.
