After over two years of political paralysis, people in Lebanon are pinning their hopes on new President Joseph Aoun, a former army commander who promises an end to instability. Many also have high hopes for the return to power of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose influence helped bring about a ceasefire with Israel that ushered in a long-absent stability. With the new U.S. administration pushing for a quick end to the war in Ukraine, many of the country’s 3.5 million internally displaced hope to return to their homes. Many of those homes have been destroyed and for many people, that means rebuilding from nothing. Lesia Bakalets in Kyiv has their story. VOA footage by Vladyslav Smilianets.
