HARARE — Zimbabwe’s incumbent president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, Saturday was announced as the victor of the 2023 general elections.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, ZEC, Saturday announced that the presidential candidate for the ruling ZANU PF, Emmerson Mnangagwa, retained the presidency after defeating his rival, Nelson Chamisa in the nation’s 2023 general elections.
Mnangagwa, who took over from longtime ruler Robert Mugabe after a military coup in 2017, was widely expected to secure re-election for a second term.
The announcement made by ZEC chairperson, Priscilla Chigumba said Mnangagwa secured 52.6% of the nation’s vote, while Chamisa secured 44%.
Mnangagwa also narrowly defeated Chamisa in the last presidential election in 2018.
