Sudan’s Economy Crippled by Disease Outbreak

The United Nations Health Agency says cholera and dengue outbreaks are gripping eastern Sudan, where thousands of people are sheltering in packed camps as fierce fighting between the country’s military and a rival para-military force grinds on. The World Health Organization says more than 160 people are suspected of having cholera in Qadarif province. The fighting has forced millions of people from their homes, and many are struggling to survive. For more perspective on the situation, VOA’s Esther Githui-Ewart spoke to Dr. Anmar Homeida, the Healthcare Programs Director with the Sudanese American Physicians Association.
