At least 1,500 prisoners escaped from a prison in Mozambique on Christmas Day as widespread protests and violence over the outcome of elections in October continued to engulf the country, officials said. Thirty-three people are said to have died as prisoners clashed with the police and military. Still in Mozambique, opposition leader Venancio Mondlane on Thursday accused security forces of allowing the unrest and looting to continue for political purposes. He also claims the October vote was rigged. The country’s Constitutional Council has said the ruling Frelimo party was the winner of the elections.
