Tunisia's Crackdown on Black African Migrants Continues
Tunisia's President Kais Saied last week announced a crackdown on illegal immigration he termed a "great replacement," language the African Union denounced as racialized and shocking. In his speech, Saied suggested that political elites in Tunisia are replacing native inhabitants with immigrant supporters. Many sub-Saharan African migrants have been evicted from their homes and are facing attacks on the streets, according to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, which says it has documented hundreds of arbitrary arrests and hundreds of evictions without notice. Mongi Dhaouadi, president of the Tunisian United Network advocacy group, spoke VOA's Esther Githui-Ewart about the crackdown and ongoing political unrest in Tunisia.
