Violence Erupts in Leer County: SPLM-IO vs. Defected Forces [5:04]

Fighting erupted in Leer County of South Sudan’s Unity State on Tuesday between SPLM-IO forces loyal to First Vice President Riek Machar and forces loyal to General Simon Maguek Gai, who defected from Machar to join the South Sudan People’s Defense Force in October. While VOA has not been able to verify the number of casualties, officials note that thousands of civilians have sought refuge in neighboring villages for safety. Viola Elias reports from Juba for VOA.
