South Sudanese Refugee Finalist for $100,000 College Scholarship
Nhial Deng, a South Sudanese who fled his country at age 11 and found solace in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, has been shortlisted for a global student prize of $100,000. Deng, the founder of the Refugee Youth Peace Ambassadorship and SheLeads, a program to empower young girls and women, is up for the Chegg.org award that recognizes students who have made an impact on the lives of their peers and society.VOA’s Esther Githui-Ewart spoke to Deng about his early childhood challenges and how he turned them into success.
