Former South African President Jacob Zuma was briefly taken to prison and released to correctional supervision Friday, prison officials said. Zuma was admitted to the Estcourt Correctional Centre and released in less than two hours after his remission was processed. Speaking at a news conference, the country’s minister of Justice and Correctional Service said that President Cyrill Ramaphosa “can remit a sentence of any offender at any time, which he has done in line with the Constitution,” adding that “It is not a specific decision about former President Zuma." According to Ronald Lamola, there are also 9,488 inmates who “are going to be released into correctional supervision.”
