Nigerians Welcome New Year with Lagos Carnival
Dancers and musicians took part in a New Year's Day carnival in Lagos, Nigeria. The event, called Fanti or Caretta Carnival, is an annual tradition usually held on the first day of the year, and was inspired by former slaves who returned from Brazil to Lagos in the 19th century. "Every January 1st, we like to be here to celebrate Isale Eko Woro, that Fanti Carnival, every January 1st we used to be here to celebrate, catch fun, crush every one of us to mingle with so many people, so every January 1st is all about us here," said Lagos resident, Olarewaju Adenike.
