Former Ghanian President John Dramani Mahama has won Saturday’s presidential primary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The national elections commission says Mahama received 98.9 percent of votes over his rivals. He is expected to accept the nomination on Monday. But in a Facebook post, he called on the party to remain united for the 2024 polls. Mahama lost to incumbent Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 and 2020. Some of Mahama’s rivals had petitioned to postpone the primaries due to alleged irregularities in the party’s voter register. Daniel Amartey Mensah is the NDC election director. He tells VOA’s James Butty, the primaries went well, and that Ghanaians believe Mahama is the better candidate, compared to the government in power.
