The countries that comprise BRICS — which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with 6 new members — are an informal grouping of emerging economies hoping to increase their sway in the global order. David Monda, professor of political science at City University of New York, tells VOA’s Yeheyes Wuhib that BRICS matters, despite President Trump’s threat to impose heavy tariffs on member nations if they were to create a rival currency to the US dollar.
