Are Niger’s Youth Ready to Defend the Country?
Coup leaders in Niamey have struck a defiant tone, repeatedly affirming their resolution to stand firm and fight if necessary following a threat by the regional bloc, ECOWAS, to use military force if the junta does not stand down and reinstate the ousted civilian president. Coup leaders have also called on young Nigeriens to be ready to defend the country — a rallying call that several students at the capital's Abdou Moumouni University said on Monday they would heed. For an analysis into the Nigerien youth perspective, VOA’s Vincent Makori spoke to Djamila Laminou, a Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) fellow from Niger.
