African governments should approach AGOA as a regional block
Since its enactment in 2000, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has been at the core of U.S. economic policy and commercial engagement with Africa. It provides eligible African countries with duty-free access to the US market. 2025, is the year the U.S. Congress is due to renew AGOA. John Mukum Mbaku is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC. as well as a Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor of Economics and John S. Hinckley Fellow at Weber State University. To benefit from the US market through AGOA, Professor Mbaku says African nations need to approach the process as a regional bloc. He first points out to VOA’s Africa News Tonight Host Yeheyes Wuhib, the rigorous AGOA eligibility requirements.
