Oscar winning actress trades American accent for her African identity
Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong'o is shedding her American-influenced accent and embracing her African identity, accent and all. In her new podcast, Mind Your Own, the Oscar winner said she has had "a complicated relationship" with the way she speaks. Nyongo'o, who was born in Mexico, raised in Nairobi and studied in the U.S., said she started using an American accent when she joined Yale School of Drama to pursue acting. Saying: “I made this pact with myself that I would learn how to sound American in a way that would guarantee me a career in acting because obviously I didn't know very many people in movies and television with Kenyan accents. There was just no market for that.”
