Analysis: Kenyans take to the streets to protest proposed tax hikes
One person was killed, and at least 200 people were injured across Kenya during nationwide protests against an estimated $2.7 billion tax hike. President William Ruto's cash-strapped government has proposed these tax hikes, which many fear will worsen the cost-of-living crisis. The government agreed to make concessions earlier on Tuesday after initial clashes with the police, but it will still proceed with some tax increases, defending them as necessary. VOA’s Paul Ndiho spoke to Edgar Githua, an international relations, security, and diplomatic expert at the US International University in Nairobi for more on how the protests are impacting life in Kenya.
