DRC Presidential Candidate Threatens to Attack Rwanda
A presidential candidate in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s December 20 elections says if he is elected president, he will order an attack on neighboring Rwanda because of its support for the M23 rebels. The comments from Noel Tshiani, leader of the political group called Force for Change, come as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has discussed deploying a SADC mission in eastern DRC to bring about peace and stability. The DRC has long accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel M23 to plunder the country’s minerals. Rwanda has denied the allegations and instead accuses DRC of supporting the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels also operating in eastern Congo. Noel Tshiani tells VOA’s James Butty, relying on outside forces for peace and stability in eastern Congo has its limitations.
