Uganda’s Opposition Faction Replaces Leader
In Uganda, the ongoing feud in the main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) took a new turn on Tuesday when one faction suspended current president Patrick Amuriat and replaced him with his vice president, Erias Lukwago. At its convention, which the Uganda High Court had earlier said could not happen, the new faction also suspended the party’s secretary general and treasurer. Amuriat has said his removal was illegal and vowed to reclaim his position. Francis Mwijukye (Mwee-Ree-Chey), new treasurer of the new FDC faction, tells VOA’s James Butty, Amuriat was removed because he was being used by President Yoweri’s Museveni’s government to infiltrate and divide the part.
