African Medical Professionals Experiencing ‘Brain Drain’
A study published in the British Medical Journal Global Health found that Africa has less than 2 healthcare professionals per 1000 people; including physicians, nurses, and midwives. The World Health Organization recommends at least 4 health workers per 1000 people in order to deliver essential health services and achieve universal health coverage. According to observers, medical brain drain, or the emigration of medical personnels from a particular country, is partly to blame for this situation as health workers are traveling abroad to seek better employment opportunities. For more, VOA’s Linord Moudou spoke to Kenyan general physician and managing director of Precise Healthcare, Dr. Theophilus Wangata.
