ECOWAS Warns Niger’s Military to Reinstate President Bazoum
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given Niger’s coup leaders one week from Sunday to return President Mohamed Bazoum to power. In a communique issued at the end of an extraordinary summit held Sunday in Abuja, Nigeria, ECOWAS said it will take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order in Niger, including the use of force. The leaders also imposed a no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger and the closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger. The leaders also froze all assets of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks. Abdel Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security, tells VOA’s James Butty, ECOWAS is determined to end the cancer of coups in the subregion.
