UN, ECOWAS Seeks Release of Niger President
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the military coup in Niger and is calling for the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum. Officers of the Presidential Guard led by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane announced Wednesday that they had seized power and are holding the president hostage. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has also condemned what he calls an assault against the democratically elected government of Niger. Abdel Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security, tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty, ECOWAS insists that President Bazoum remains the legitimate and legal president of Niger and must be reinstated as soon as possible.
