Senegal’s Opposition Picks Sonko as Presidential Candidate
Patriots of Senegal for Work Ethics and Fraternity party (PASTEF) has chosen Ousmane Sonko as its candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Sonko faces two legal hurdles – a rape charge and libel conviction. He has appealed the conviction. Nafissa Dia, a member of Sonko’s party, says even though President Macky Sall said he will not seek a third term, he is still active behind the scenes deciding who should run. For example, Dia tells VOA’s James Butty that Sonko was not allowed to attend his own nomination as he is still under house arrest.
