West African leaders meeting Monday in Guinea-Bissau’s capital chose Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as chairman of the regional body. He succeeds Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. President Tinubu’s election comes as the sub-region faces many challenges, including terrorism and unconstitutional changes of government in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. Abdel Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security, tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty President Tinubu’s election was unanimous because ECOWAS needs a strong leader to guide the region through these challenges.
