Mali’s Constitutional Referendum Campaign Ends

Friday is the final day of campaigning for Sunday’s long-delayed constitutional referendum in Mali between ‘Yes’ and “No’ supporters. The military, led by Colonel Assimi Goita, overthrew the country’s last democratically elected president in August 2020. The African Union says the referendum would pave the way for elections in February 2024. Some Malians say the new constitution would give too much power to the president. Moussa Kondo, executive director of the Sahel Institute, a group that is dedicated to promoting and consolidating democracy in the Sahel region, tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty, the “No” coalition has been having a difficult time getting its message through because they have been denied public spaces to hold rallies.
