Zimbabwean Writer Hails Court Acquittal Over Protest March

Zimbabwe writer and filmmaker, Tsitsi Dangarembga, says her acquittal by the Zimbabwe High Court proves her earlier conviction was a miscarriage of justice. A Harare Magistrates Court found her guilty in 2020 for holding up a sign demanding institutional reform. The government said that she was demonstrating without permission and indicted her for “incitement to violence.” But an Appeals Court Monday acquitted her of the charge. Tsitsi tells VOA’s James Butty, she is encouraged the High Court showed respect for the laws of Zimbabwe. But she cautions that there appears to be a tendency of the Magistrates Court and the ruling ZANU-PF to “weaponize” the law.
