Uganda's parliament on Tuesday passed a law that criminalizes identifying as LGBTQ, handing authorities broad new powers to target Ugandans who already face legal discrimination and mob violence. The new law appears to be the first to outlaw merely identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer, according to rights group Human Rights Watch. Same-sex relations are already illegal in Uganda. VOA’s Esther Githui-Ewart spoke to Kharim Ntambi, a Washington-based Ugandan rights activist.
