Exiled Tanzania Opposition Leader Returns Home
Tanzanian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu received a warm welcome from supporters when he landed at the Julius Nyerere International Airport Wednesday after returning from exile. Lissu, a fierce critic of the government, survived an attempt on his life in 2017 when he was shot 16 times by unknown gunmen. In an interview recorded before he left from Belgium, Lissu, vice chairman of the Chadema opposition political party, told Africa 54 host Esther Githui-Ewart he is pleased with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s lifting of a ban allowing opposition parties hold rallies. He said he will push for constitutional reforms to allow democracy in Tanzania to thrive.
