South Sudan in Focus: President Salva Kiir has unveiled a plan to extend South Sudan’s 36-month transitional period-- which is set to expire in February 2023-- for another 24 months; The Troika countries of the U.S., U.K. and Norway boycotted the ceremony for the announcement of a roadmap for extending South Sudan's 36-month transitional period to February 2025. The ambassadors of the Troika countries wrote to President Salva Kiir expressing their disappointment over what they call a lack of consultations and inclusivity in the process of developing the roadmap; South Sudan’s Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAM-VM) says it is struggling to continue with its activities after the U.S. withdrew funding; The United States government has announced assistance worth more than 200 million dollars to support millions of South Sudanese who are food insecure.
