VOA Sports Reporter Examines the Inequalities Women Face in Sports
In recent article by Global Sport Matters, it was stated that women’s sports continue to face gender discrimination and inequities. The article also says that the biggest challenges female athletes in Africa face include poor funding and limited opportunities. Better media coverage, sponsorships, and tangible opportunities would help women gain equal footing with their male counterparts. VOA’s Amina Aliyu alongside her co-hosts Simegnish Yekoye and Auriane Itangishaka spoke with VOA’s Sonny Young, host of “Sonny Side of Sports” about African and African American female athletes who are dominating headlines around the world. Sonny discusses the controversy behind WNBA player Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia. He also delves into the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s equal pay settlement against the U.S. Soccer Federation and how this could affect women athletes in Africa.
