The “Cold War” may have ended with the 1991 demise of the Soviet Union, but Russia, the United States, China, and other nuclear states have never relaxed their readiness. The regimen of treaties that defined U.S. – Russian nuclear weapons and their delivery systems have recently been questioned. Meanwhile, the U.S. has deployed a small nuclear warhead aboard its missile submarines – one half the size of the weapon that flattened Hiroshima, Japan in August 1945. On this edition of Encounter, VOA Senior Analyst, Jeffrey Young, hosts two nuclear experts – Jooeun Kim at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Hans Kristensen, with the Federation of American Scientists, to discuss the status and future of nuclear arms treaties and the implications of deploying this small new nuclear warhead.
