In Zimbabwe, lawyers representing the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, say they plan to challenge the ruling of a magistrate court Sunday that upheld a government ban on the party’s political rally. The decision comes as the police have given instructions to officers nationwide not to ban opposition political rallies in the build-up to the August 23 general elections. The police, however, advised political parties to follow the proper procedures when arranging for venues for rallies. Agency Gumbo, one of lawyers representing CCC, tells VOA’s James Butty, the police directive vindicates the opposition position that there is an erosion of democracy in Zimbabwe.
