The United Nations' special envoy and head of the U.N. mission in Sudan, known as UNITAMS, announced his resignation Wednesday. In his departure, Volker Perthes issued a warning that the conflict in Sudan has the potential to escalate into a full-blown civil war. Perthes, who was declared persona non grata by the Sudanese army in June, strongly condemned widespread human rights violations, including ethnic targeting, sexual abuse, and airstrikes on civilian areas by Sudan's warring factions. VOA's Nabeel Biajo spoke with Kholood Khair, a Sudanese analyst and the director of the Khartoum-based think tank, the Confluence Advisory.
