The U.N. Human Rights Council on Thursday narrowly passed a motion to increase monitoring of Sudan's human rights abuses amidst opposition from African nations. With 18 in favor, 15 opposed, and 14 abstaining, no African country supported the Western-backed initiative. Sudan's ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan described the conflict as an internal affair and called for "African solutions for African problems."
