Nigeria's new President Bola Tinubu on Monday said his decision to remove a fuel subsidy would free up money for education, regular power supply, infrastructure and healthcare.
Fuel prices have nearly tripled in the West African nation causing a spike in transport costs and intermittent grid supply.
"This is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under," Tinubu said in his first public comments since announcing the petrol subsidy removal after his swearing-in on May 29.
