A spokesperson for the Sudanese Professional Association, which led Sudan’s 2019 revolution, says the criteria of establishing labor unions in Sudan should be based on international standards, including freedom of association and the right to organize. This comes after Sudan’s Military Leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Monday froze the activities of trade unions, including taking control of their finances and leadership. According to Reuters, the general announced in a decree he will set up a committee to review and take over the finances of the unions in and outside Sudan. VOA’s James Butty spoke with Sudanese Professionals Association spokesperson Salma Nour about the unpredictability of the military’s decision to unilaterally freeze union activities.
